Laser Skin Resurfacing: What To Expect Before and After Treatment

In the past, transformative facial rejuvenation was only possible with plastic surgery and a lengthy healing process, but times have changed! Today, laser treatments offer enviable results with minimal side effects. Join us to learn how laser skin resurfacing can help you turn back the clock and what you can expect before and after your first session.

What is laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a revolutionary approach to anti-aging that can deliver dramatic results that are obvious when comparing before and after photos. Here’s a closer look at the process:

How does laser skin resurfacing work?

In order to erase fine lines and wrinkles, reverse sun damage, and soften acne scars, laser skin resurfacing utilizes advanced laser technology to stimulate cellular regeneration. Ablative devices, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers, vaporize the outermost layer of skin.

Conversely, non-ablative models, like fractional lasers, create heat within deeper layers to promote rejuvenation from the inside out. Both approaches stimulate your body’s natural healing mechanisms to begin generating more collagen and elastin.

Who is a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing?

Because there’s so much variation among laser devices, laser skin resurfacing can treat patients with a wide range of skin types and tones. For example, our CoolPeel laser treatment is gentle enough for sensitive skin and darker skin tones.

On the other hand, Helix laser treatments may be better-suited to clients with lighter skin who want more immediate results. And while some lasers are safe to use around the eyes, others may not be appropriate for crow’s feet and under-eye bags.

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage and dark spots
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Enlarged pores
  • Skin laxity
  • Melasma

What to expect before laser skin resurfacing

Before you even get to the after photos, you’ll need to prep your skin for laser resurfacing. Here’s what you can expect leading up to your treatment:

Professional consultation

The first step to facial rejuvenation with laser skin resurfacing is a consultation with your esthetician or healthcare provider, who will assess your skin for compatibility, review your medical history, and ask about your goals for treatment. Then, they will help you create a personalized treatment plan to help you achieve the skin of your dreams.

Pre-treatment skin prep

Preparing for your treatment is essential in the weeks before (and after) a laser skin rejuvenation treatment. Ensure proper sun protection by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and avoid direct UV exposure. If retinoids, harsh exfoliants, and acids are part of your skincare routine, you’ll need to put them away for now.

What to do before your appointment

As your appointment approaches, stick to gentle skincare products like mild cleaners, fragrance-free moisturizer, and mineral sunscreen. Avoid hair removal in the area, including waxing, tweezing, and threading.

Ensure your skin is clean and product-free on the day of your laser skin resurfacing session. You might also consider taking ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain reliever about an hour before you arrive.

What to expect after laser skin resurfacing

How you care for your skin after laser skin resurfacing will impact your comfort during the recovery period. Here’s what you need to know about the immediate effects of laser treatments and the best aftercare protocols:

Are there any side effects?

Redness, swelling, and temporary discomfort are common after laser skin resurfacing, but should subside within a few days. You may have a sensation similar to a sunburn. As the healing process progresses, skin may itch, peel, or flake. Some people experience blistering and other adverse reactions, especially after ablative laser sessions.

Immediately after laser skin resurfacing, your esthetician may apply a soothing cream or ointment to protect your skin before heading out into the elements. Deeper treatments may require a non-stick dressing for one or two days. In any case, be sure to protect your face from sun exposure and avoid makeup.

In the first few days after laser skin resurfacing, keep your skin clean and hydrated using gentle products. An ice pack can offer relief from swelling and inflammation. As you heal, avoid picking and peeling dead skin cells, which can increase the risk of infection, scarring, and a prolonged recovery time.

Non-ablative lasers require minimal downtime, with redness and sensitivity generally only lasting one to three days. However, you may need a week or so to recover from more intensive laser treatments.

How many treatments do you need?

Many clients achieve drastic results after three to six non-ablative laser skin resurfacing sessions. Ablative lasers may deliver transformative effects in a single treatment.
